The masque of red death, along with many other tales by edgar allen poe, use defining settings and elaborate surroundings to build momentum and forewarn the reader of events that are soon to unfold.
This technique is exquisitely displayed in the Masque of red death through the colors of decor that adorn prince prosperos bizzare paradise. The blood red hue of the window panes and turibid black of the tapestries in the westward room prepare the reader for what is to be a dramatic and blood drenched finale. Black and red, both colors of audicity and finality, are two colors most commonly associated with death, ashes, emptiness, and blood; all concepts that define The Masque of red death. In other words, colors that are perfect tools to shape Mr. Poes story.
Another device used to construct the story, is the stealth used by the menacing stranger that appears at prince prosperos fantasia. Representing the disease himself, the stranger not only looks the part of death, but also delivers the disease in the way that it would arrive naturally…suddenly, and amidst oblivion.
Also used, and in my opinion most importantly,is the emphasis upon the clock and the eerie stillness it brings when announcing it’s presence. Time is a very important principle when dealing with matters of life and death. Inescaple, and nonexistent it is a force that makes it’s mark upon us, no matter our stature, wealth or lack thereof. An entity rather like the “red death” that reigns in the story at hand. By accentuating the wholeness with which the doldrum of time brings the guests to a complete halt, Mr. poe presents us with the reality of both time, death and the imminence with which they can claim us.
